IT Certificates in Gauteng 2026/2027: How to Choose the Right Course for Your Career

If you are planning to build a career in technology, an IT certificate can provide a structured starting point without requiring you to begin with a full three- or four-year degree.

However, choosing an IT programme in Gauteng requires more than searching for the cheapest or shortest course. Applicants should check the qualification level, registration status, admission requirements, curriculum, practical training, delivery method and progression opportunities before submitting an application.

For the 2026/2027 study period, there is also an important distinction between an institution’s general IT programme and a specific October intake. Application dates are set by individual providers, so applicants should not assume that every IT certificate has the same closing date.

What has changed for the 2026/2027 intake?

One important development is that there are currently IT qualifications registered on the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) database with registration periods extending into the 2026/2027 academic cycle.

For example, SAQA lists the University of Johannesburg’s Higher Certificate in Information Technology as a registered NQF Level 5 qualification carrying 120 credits. The qualification’s current registration period runs until June 2027.

SAQA also lists other current Higher Certificate in Information Technology qualifications, including qualifications registered in 2026.

This is useful for applicants because it shows why checking the specific qualification and provider matters. A course described online simply as an “IT certificate” may not have the same qualification level, regulatory status or career pathway as another programme.

When was the opportunity announced?

There is no single national October 2026 announcement covering every IT certificate in Gauteng.

Instead, institutions publish their own programme information and application periods.

One confirmed example is the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Its official Higher Certificate in Information Technology page states that applications opened on 13 April 2026 and close on 31 October 2026. The programme is offered part-time at the Auckland Park Kingsway campus, is NQF Level 5 and carries 120 credits.

That makes UJ particularly relevant to applicants searching for an IT certificate with an October 2026 closing date. Applicants should nevertheless confirm availability directly with UJ before submitting an application.

What does the original programme information say?

UJ describes its Higher Certificate in Information Technology as an academically based and industry-oriented programme covering areas including software design and development and practical aspects of information technology.

The qualification is also recorded by SAQA as SAQA ID 111614, NQF Level 5 and 120 credits.

Other institutions offer different IT certificates.

For example, Richfield’s official Higher Certificate in Information Technology is listed as an NQF Level 5, 120-credit qualification with a one-year duration. Its curriculum includes subjects such as introductory programming, web technology, system software, IT help-desk work and work-integrated learning.

These differences demonstrate why applicants should compare the actual curriculum instead of choosing a programme solely because its title contains the words “IT certificate.”

How do you choose the right IT certificate?

Start with the type of technology work you are interested in.

1. Decide what you want to learn

If you are interested in software, look for programmes containing programming, software development and web technology.

If you are more interested in technical support, look for subjects involving computer hardware, operating systems, networking, troubleshooting and help-desk support.

If cybersecurity interests you, check whether the provider offers dedicated security modules or a separate cybersecurity qualification.

A good curriculum should give you enough information to understand what skills you will actually develop.

2. Check the NQF level

Do not assume every “certificate” has the same academic standing.

For example, UJ’s Higher Certificate in Information Technology is NQF Level 5 with 120 credits.

Richfield’s current Higher Certificate in Information Technology is also listed at NQF Level 5 with 120 credits.

Before registering, search the qualification on the official SAQA database and compare the qualification ID, NQF level, credits, registration status and registration dates.

What requirements are confirmed?

Admission requirements depend on the institution.

UJ’s official programme page lists a Matric certificate or equivalent qualification and states that practical experience in the IT industry is required for its Higher Certificate in Information Technology. It also indicates that selection is handled by the department.

Richfield’s official programme information provides different admission routes, including an NSC with the appropriate Higher Certificate endorsement, an appropriate NCV Level 4 qualification, mature-age exemption provisions and recognition of prior learning.

This is why applicants should not copy admission requirements from another IT college and assume they apply everywhere.

Is there a stipend?

Applicants should be particularly careful with claims about stipends.

A normal IT certificate or higher certificate programme is not automatically a funded learnership and should not be advertised as providing a monthly stipend unless the provider or funding organisation explicitly confirms it.

The official programme information reviewed for this article does not establish a universal monthly stipend for IT certificate students.

If a website or social media post promises a stipend, accommodation or guaranteed employment, verify the claim directly with the institution before providing personal information or paying money.

Related Opportunities 2026

Where are these programmes located?

Gauteng has several institutions offering IT-related education.

UJ’s Higher Certificate in Information Technology is listed at its Auckland Park Kingsway campus.

Richfield states that it has Gauteng campuses including Bryanston, Newtown Junction, Pretoria and Centurion, while its IT Higher Certificate is available on campus and online.

Location therefore matters if you need face-to-face classes. Applicants should check the exact campus offering the qualification rather than assuming every campus provides every programme.

What documents should applicants prepare?

The exact document list must be confirmed with the provider, but applicants should generally prepare:

  • South African ID or valid identification
  • Matric certificate or final school results
  • Relevant previous qualifications
  • NCV certificate where applicable
  • Proof of residence if requested
  • Certified documents where specifically required
  • Contact details and an active email address

Do not certify or upload documents unnecessarily if the institution does not request them. Follow the provider’s current application instructions.

Application tips for October 2026

Before submitting an application, use this checklist:

Check the closing date. UJ currently lists 31 October 2026 as the application closing date for its Higher Certificate in Information Technology.

Check the qualification. Confirm the qualification name, SAQA ID, NQF level and credits.

Read the curriculum. Make sure the modules match the type of IT career you want to pursue.

Check the study format. Find out whether the programme is campus-based, online, part-time or full-time.

Check the total cost. Ask about tuition, registration, examination, technology and other compulsory charges.

Use the official application page. Avoid WhatsApp numbers, unofficial application forms and third-party websites claiming to process applications.

Keep proof of your application. Save your application reference, confirmation email and payment receipt where applicable.

Official application links

For the most reliable information, start with the provider’s official website:

Applicants should use the official institution website rather than a third-party application site.

What information could change?

Information about IT programmes can change between application periods.

The provider may change its application deadline, fees, admission requirements, campus availability, delivery method or number of places available.

A programme can also have different application dates from another qualification offered by the same institution.

For that reason, information published in September or October 2026 should still be checked against the provider’s live official page immediately before applying.

Final advice for Gauteng IT applicants

An IT certificate can be a useful entry point into technology, but the qualification should match your intended career direction.

Do not choose a programme only because it is advertised as “IT,” “quick,” “free” or “guaranteed employment.” Instead, check who offers it, what qualification you receive, its NQF level, what you will study, whether the qualification is properly registered, what the admission requirements are and what progression options are available.

For October 2026 applications, the safest approach is to verify every important detail directly with the institution. Dates, fees and admission rules can change, while social-media advertisements and third-party websites may contain outdated information.
